Astrea Strings were born in 1863, when Joesph prosper Guivier, a French musician's son, started his business of the manufacture and importing of strings for musical instruments in London and soon became J.P. Guivier and Co.
Joseph sold the business to Mrs. Ellen Cohn following his retirement in 1886, and subsequently Ellen's son Harry ran the business from 1921 until 1960. By the 1940's the business was established at it's current location in Mortimer Street, London producing Astrea Strings and restoring, repairing, buying and selling all violin family instruments.
In the Early 80's, Alan Wilks - then Managing Director, arranged to transfer Astrea string production from the London premises to Nashville Music Strings, a specialist string manufacturer located in South Wales. Nashville's successor company, Strings & Things Ltd, continued producing Astrea for J.P. Guivier & Co. until 2019 when they acquired the ownership of Astrea Strings in it's entirety.
